This illustration demonstrates the differences between the square and mattress style gabions.  The dimensions given are just examples of the versatility available in the layout on a site. The number of compartments in any given unit is also flexible depending on the physical requirements and unique problems of any given job.

The above thumbnails are miscellaneous field shots of both  square and mattress style gabions.  Notice in the last three photos how over time organic debris and living plants will infiltrate the structure enhancing the stability with the intertwined root structure.
